Do you suffer from sleep apnea? It is a surprisingly common condition says Dr. Azimi, with symptoms that include snoring, loss of sleep and headaches. While there are a few potential causes of sleep apnea, the treatment options can range from custom shaped dental devices for mild to moderate symptoms, to CPAP devices for the more extreme symptoms.
Dr. Azimi says the most common cause of sleep apnea is the narrowing of the airways during sleep, which can lead to a shortage of oxygen in the brain. This usually occurs when the muscles controlling the tongue relax, allowing it to fall toward the back of the throat and obstruct breathing. When the airway becomes obstructed, sufferers will often wake up, sometimes up to hundreds of times in a single night.
Even worse, people afflicted with sleep apnea are frequently stirred from deeper REM sleep without waking up completely. This creates the illusion of a full night’s sleep, without receiving any of the restful benefits of actual deep sleep. Sufferers often wake up completely exhausted with no understanding as to why. For this reason, sleep apnea is an under-diagnosed medical condition, but is one that Dr. Azimi has dealt with on many occasions.
